Project Description:
The challenge of this project was to restore this magnificent structure to its original splendor which it was built in 1907, a treasured landmark in Steubenville, OH. To accomplish this nearly every aspect of the exterior of the building had to be attended to. The scope of our work included rebuilding sandstone faces and molding, cleaning stone and applying stone strengthener, replacing the tile roof and copper guttering, painting domes, crosses and other miscellaneous trim, replacing granite steps, and installing new storm windows and bird screens.
Project Execution:
The project commenced with a thorough cleaning of the exterior masonry, which had been exposed for decades to the steel mills that were located across the river from the Church. The exterior was then coated with a stone strengthener.
The roof tile installation of the two small domes used tiles that weighed in excess of 800 pounds per square creating a challenge to lift them to the apex of the Church. Multiple layers of old roofing materials complicated the demolition of the existing roof.
Installing new granite over the existing steps completed the granite installation of this project. The entire area was precisely measured and fabricated so they would fit perfectly over the existing steps. The granite slabs (437 pieces) were installed by hand using four craftsmen who laid each piece so it would properly fall to the existing floor drains.
The project architect had an inspector on the job site throughout the project to inspect all aspects of our work. Neither the architect nor inspector had any punch list items and assessed the work as excellent.
Summary:
Midwest Maintenance, Inc. completed over 95% of the project with its own staff of craftsmen; a subcontractor was used for window installation. We worked closely with project architect, Lestor Zapor, who had created a precise plan for this project and MMI was able to mirror the plan.
Midwest Maintenance, Inc. won 1st place in the “Historical Restoration under $2 Million” category awarded by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Excellence in Construction Awards competition.
